Florence, Augustus J.C. Hare, 1890
Florence, by Augustus J.C. Hare.
Augustus John Cuthbert Hare (1834–1903) was one of the most widely read Victorian travel writers, known for his richly detailed guides to Italy and beyond. In Florence he offered visitors a blend of practical touring advice with history, art appreciation, and literary anecdote, enhanced by finely engraved illustrations and a colour map. First issued in the 1880s, it quickly established itself as a standard English-language guide to the city, reflecting both Hare’s erudition and the fascination Florence held for late 19th-century travellers.
