The Golden Bough; A Study in Magic and Religion. Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged. In three volumes (complete). By J.G. Frazer, D.C.L., LL.D., Litt.D., Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

SOLD

Written by Scottish anthropologist, Sir James George Frazer, this is a comparative study of religion and mythology, and not without controversy when first released.

Published by Macmillan and Co. Ltd, London, 1900. Scarce. This second edition was expanded to include an extra volume after the first 2 Volume printing of 1890.

A good set of 3 dark green cloth hardbacks with gilt cover design to front and gilt titles to spine. Covers with rubbing and bumping and wear to hinges. Endpapers are split at inner joints, but all still bound. Webbing showing clearly at rear of Volume 2. Spotting to endpapers and frontispiece tissue guard in Volume 1 has offset spotting. Text is nice and clean throughout. Uncut edges to vertical edge of text block as issued. Small booksellers sticker to first pastedown of Volume 3 (Showa Shoten, Tokyo). Imperfect, but a very readable set, and priced accordingly for this scarce work.

Provenance; from the library of the late William St Clair (1937 - 2021), British historian, academic and author.

Vol. 1: xxviii + 467pp.

Vol. 2: x + 471pp.

Vol. 3: x + 490pp + 6pp Publisher's advertisements..
