Burmese Buddhist teachings books for monks - set of 3, similarities to kammavaca, 1911

RESERVED

This is a very rare set of 3 Burmese books, written in Pali and published in 1911. We have never seen another set in over 15 years of buying and selling Asian books.

Each volume has a burgundy red leather cover with elaborate gold design. Each volume approx 245mm high x 165mm wide x 30mm deep. Text in Pali.

The 3 volumes form a set covering the three main parts in the interpretation and understanding of the whole Buddhist teaching and philosophy:

1. Stories about past lives of Buddha
2. Rules for monks
3. Realisation of self in mind and body, and situations e.g thinking and knowing of sadness, greed, happiness etc.

These books provide stories which monks can use for learning.

The books contain the name of the donor and their address and the recipient - the head monk and monastry.

The Burmese climate has been very tough on these books. They are in poor condition. Covers are worn, brittle, wormed and at least partially detached. Some pieces missing (see photographs). The text has fared better and is generally pretty clean throughout.

These books are really a restoration project, which would have the end result of a very desirable and rare set indeed.
