A Tour in Sutherlandshire, with Extracts from the Field-Books of A Sportsman and Naturalist. By Charles St. John, Esq. With Woodcuts. In Two Volumes, complete.

Published by John Murray, London, 1849. First edition. Printed by William Clowes and Sons. Includes a handwritten letter to Lord Tweedmouth, from John Alexander Harvie-Brown written at Dunipace House, Larbert, September 15th, 1884.

Lord Tweedmouth was Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, who is particularly noted for establishing the Golden Retriever dog breed in 1868.

John Harvie-Brown is known for editing the journal 'Annals of Scottish History', and published around 250 books and papers on natural history subjects.

A very good set of 2 full green leather volumes with gilt borders to covers and raised bands and gilt decoration to spine. With red and black morocco labels with gilt titles. Some scuffs and scrapes to leather and a little light wear to covers. Feathered marble endpapers with matching edges of text block. 'Advance with Courage' armorial bookplate to first pastedown of both volumes. This is the motto of the Marjoribanks family. Small bookbinder's stamp to first blank endpaper in each volume.

Text is very good throughout - bright and clean with almost no spotting. Just a few marks to endpapers and very occasional page flaw such as a light fold crease. Vol II title page has a very small marginal nibble from the lower edge of the title page by the gutter. Some neatly scripted marginal annotations to one spread in Volume I.

All Plates as called for.
