Published by Macmillan and Co, London, 1874. First edition thus. The Prefatory Note states that the story is reprinted, with corrections, from the author's 'Essays Biographical and Critical; Chiefly on English Poets', published in 1856.

A good dark blue full leather hardback, with raised bands, gilt tooled decoration and red morocco label. Covers worn, scuffed and bumped. Spine colour is faded and the leather is dulled and worn, particularly at the tail of spine. Wear to board edges and outer hinges. Marbled endpapers with marbled text block edges - dust toned to top edge. Some spotting to endpapers.

The text is clean and bright throughout.
