This is a very unusual and rather charming volume - on the face of it it has the appearance of a typical Victorian binding - black leather spine and corners, with raised bands, gilt tooled decoration and gilt red morocco title label. With burgundy cloth over boards.

The title label reads 'Notes and Extracts', but inside is a completely blank volume of several hundred pages, which is basically a disguised journal book which can be easily hidden in plain sight on any bookshelf. Perfect for a secret journal.

On the first pastedown is a small label reading 'Bound by Peter Reid, Publisher, Wick' (Scotland). Peter Reid of Wick was a regional printer and publisher active from the 1830s onwards. He founded and printed the iconic John O’Groat Journal, and produced local pamphlets, almanacs, and occasional reference works under the imprint Peter Reid & Co./Sons. He was active until at least the early 20th century.

The black leather is in fine condition with some light wear to extremities. The cloth boards are sunned (particularly the front cover). Inside, the endpapers - first and last few leaves - are age spotted, but the bulk of the text is completely bright and clean. With speckling to edges of text block, as issued.

The first half of the pages feature very feint lined rules, and the second half of pages are completely blank. Binding is tight and sound. The book is in unused condition.

A highly unusual volume. Possibly for use as a film prop, stage prop or set decor, or as your own secret journal of course.

Weight approximately 707g (unpacked).

Approx Dimensions: 205mm high x 134mm wide x 36mm deep.
