Spinal Disease and Spinal Curvature; Their Treatment by Suspension and the use of the Plaster of Paris Bandage, by Lewis A. Sayre, M.D. of New York, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York etc.

Published by Smith, Elder, & Co., London 1877. First edition.

Very scarce first printing of this medical text by Lewis A. Sayre (1820-1900), a leading American 19th Century Orthopaedic Surgeon, and founder of Bellevue Medical College. The book is noted for the artistry of its high quality mounted Woodburytype photographs. Includes 4 x fold-out concertina sections, each with 3-4 photographs, and 4 smaller images on normal pages. There are 19 photographs in total - we believe one leaf of 2 photographs to be missing, facing p. 115. 70 illustrated figures.

A good copy of this rare hardback. Bound in brown cloth with gilt titles. Ex-Library - Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, but only library marking is the ink stamp of the first pastedown, which is unobtrusive. Cover worn and rubbed.

Text is good with some usage marks such as thumbprints and slight age toning. Binding is loosening, and gaps between gatherings show through to inner spine.
