The Newcombes. Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family. Edited by A. Pendennis, Esq. Steel and Wood Engravings by Richard Doyle.

The book is actually authored by William Makepeace Thackeray, with Pendennis a character from his earlier novel of the same name. The Newcombes references characters in his classic novel, Vanity Fair. The novel was originally serialised over a 2 year period previously.

Published by Bradbury and Evans, London, 1854 & 1855. 2 Volumes complete. Fist edition thus.

A good set of 2 hardbacks with leather spines and corners and marbled paper over boards.  Raised bands and gilt to spine. Both volumes have damage to the title labels on the spine. Covers worn, rubbed and bumped. Previous owner's signature to first pastedown. Title pages and facing pages are heavily foxed due to lack of tissue guards. Endpapers cracked at inner joints on Volume 1. All soundly bound. Text is good throughout with some light spotting, but plates are foxed, affecting the page surrounding them. An uncommon set.
