This three-volume first edition of Traité des arts céramiques (1844) by Alexandre Brongniart offers an in-depth study of ceramic arts, encompassing their historical development, practical techniques, and scientific theory. Brongniart (1770–1847), a French chemist, mineralogist, and director of the Sèvres Porcelain Factory, was a key figure in establishing ceramics as both an industrial science and a subject of scholarly research. His work is considered foundational in the field of ceramic technology.

The two text volumes include extensive discussion on the classification, manufacture, and history of pottery across cultures, while the separate atlas volume presents detailed plates—many in colour—depicting ceramic forms, kiln designs, glazes, and decorative patterns. The set reflects both Brongniart’s scientific approach and his appreciation for the artistic and cultural significance of pottery.

Traité des arts céramiques ou des poteries considérées dans leur histoire, leur pratique et leur théorie, par Alexandre Brongniart. In three volumes, complete - 2 text volumes with some illustrations plus a larger 'Atlas' – primarily a volume of illustrated plates, including colour images.

(Treatise on ceramic arts or pottery with consideration of their history, practice and theory)

Published by Béchet Jeune and Mathias (Augustin), Paris, November 1844 first edition.

A good set of 3 volumes, each with tan leather spines and corners and marbled paper over boards. With black morocco labels with gilt titles to spines. Covers with scuffing, bumping and wear. Ex-library, with reference number labels near tail of spine. Atlas volume with small loss of leather to tail of spine. With usual reference library labels and markings to endpapers, including official 'Withdrawn from stock' stamp. All soundly bound.

Text is bright throughout, with scattered age-spotting. Some creasing to endpapers. The Atlas volume has 3 fold-out tables near the beginning, with some creasing. The illustrations are detailed and clear and the colour plates particularly striking. More age-spotting/discoloration to the Atlas volume than the others, but nonetheless a striking set. An uncommon set of books.
