Collection of Burmese Buddhist votive figurines

This beautiful collection of 3 Burmese votive figurines are available to purchase as a group of three or separately.

Each figure has been beautifully carved in teakwood and decorated with gold lacquer.

These pieces are all 20th Century - probably from around the 1960s, but what they lack in great age they more than make up for in character.

1. Seated Buddha atop a stupa
The serene Buddha sits on a stupa base with 3 rows of figures - the top 2 rows of smaller seated Buddhas. The lower row consists of 8 animals - presumably from the Burmese zodiac. Larger versions in similar style have been known to be reliquary objects with a compartment inside the base of the stupa, but this is not the case with this object. Underneath the gold lacquer, the black lacquer base can also be seen helping to highlight the details.

Dimensions:
Height approx 15.5cm, diameter 7.5cm

2. Standing monk (larger version)
Intricate carving provides a lovely finish to the standing monk with his walking stick and fan.

Dimensions:
Height approx 13.5cm, width 4cm, depth 4.3cm

3. Standing monk (smaller version)
Intricate carving provides a lovely finish to the standing monk with his walking stick and fan.

Dimensions:
Height approx 10.5cm, width 3.5cm, depth 3.5cm

The 2 monks depicted are travelling monks, not based in any one temple. They are seen carrying a yat, a palm leaf fan, which is usually made from the single frond of the palmyta palm and often edged with black velvet. It is used by the monk for shelter from the elements and to screen him in the presence of women. The walking stick is also used with the monk's robes to help construct a shelter at night when sleeping outdoors.

Costs:
Smaller standing monk: £200
Larger standing monk: £250
Seated Buddha on stupa: £350

Group of 3 votive figures: £650 (save £150 compared with individual costs)
