The life and travels of Isabella Bird (1831-1904) are among the most remarkable of the nineteenth century, and this biography by Anna M. Stoddart offers a detailed and engaging account of her extraordinary career. Drawing on Bird's own writings, letters, and contemporary sources, The Life of Isabella Bird traces her journeys across North America, Japan, the Middle East, and Asia, as well as her later work as a pioneering female Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. The work provides valuable insight not only into her travels, but also into her character, motivations, and the wider context of Victorian exploration, making it an essential companion to her published narratives and a significant work in its own right.
