This small collection of three vintage guidebooks to the historic town of St Andrews spans more than sixty years and reflects the enduring influence of the local historian David Hay Fleming. The two early volumes of Handbook of St Andrews from 1910 and 1927 were written directly by Fleming and provide detailed accounts of the town's long history, university, cathedral ruins and famous golf links, illustrated with plans, photographs and contemporary advertising. The later Standard Guide to St Andrews of 1973 draws upon Flemings earlier researches and continues the tradition of introducing visitors to one of Scotland's most historic burghs and the home of the University of St Andrews. Together the three guides offer an appealing glimpse of St Andrews as seen by visitors across the twentieth century, with period illustrations, folding plans and evocative advertisements that capture the character of the town and its golfing heritage.
