Castle Richmond by Anthony Trollope is a social novel set in Ireland during the Great Famine, first published in 1860. Drawing on his own experience of Ireland, Trollope explores themes of inheritance, legitimacy and moral responsibility against the backdrop of one of the most challenging periods in Irish history. Combining domestic drama with a wider social context, the novel reflects his characteristic realism and sympathy of observation, offering a nuanced portrayal of both Anglo-Irish society and the hardships of the time. Though less well known than his Barsetshire or Palliser novels, Castle Richmond remains a thoughtful and historically grounded work within Trollope’s wider oeuvre.
