Goethe's Egmont (written 1775-1787, first published 1788) is one of his most celebrated tragedies, dramatising the life and execution of the Flemish nobleman Count Egmont, a hero of resistance against Spanish rule in the Netherlands. The play combines political drama with personal tragedy and became especially famous through Ludwig van Beethoven's Egmont Overture and incidental music (1809–10), which gave the work a lasting presence on stage and in concert halls.
