The Householder by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala is the author's acclaimed early novel, first published in 1960, offering a perceptive and often gently humorous portrait of middle-class life in post-independence India. The story follows the young schoolteacher Prem as he adjusts to the realities of arranged marriage, work and adult responsibility, capturing the tensions between tradition, modernity and personal expectation. One of Jhabvala's best-known early works, the novel was later adapted for film by Merchant Ivory, with whom she would go on to enjoy a celebrated long creative partnership.
