SKU LAN8842

Antique North East Thailand / Laos seated bronze Buddha, c. 1800.

A very attractive and unusual bronze Buddha from Northern Thailand/Laos.

In very good condition with the bronze having a lovely patina and just the occasional small age mark. With small traces of applied gold leaf to the chest area. With flame usnisha.

Sitting on a pierced pedestal base. The Buddha's hands are in meditation. The legs are in half lotus position.

On the reverse of the base is an inscription which talks about the specifics about this particular Buddha. Although at a glance, the first impression is that this is written in Thai, unfortunately we cannot translate as the language is actually rather obscure, even to Thai scholars. It appears to be a language variant of Thai / Isaan / Lao Script - Fak Kham / Thai Noi / Lao Derm (ภาษา - ไทย / อีสาน / ลาว อักษร - ฝักขาม / ไทยน้อย / ลาวเดิม), indicating its origin from the area of North East Thailand and Laos.

Dimensions:
22.8cm high x 9.4cm wide x 6.7cm deep. (9 inches high).

Weight:
Approximately 840g.

Date:
c. 1800.

Provenance:
Private English collection. Last purchased in Singapore in 1987. Supplied with the Singapore dealer's Certificate of authenticity (who identify the piece as being Thai 'Late Ayuthaya' period), along with the usual Lanna Antique certification.
