SOLD

Published by John G. Murdoch, Holborn (London). The preliminary Pictorial title page also lists Adam & Co of London and Newcastle on Tyne. Undated, but c. 1880.

A large and imposing black cloth hardback with beautiful and elaborate gilt pictorial design and blind stamping. Cover with mild wear and bumping. Raised bands to spines a little rubbed. Inner front joint after first free endpaper is split to binding cords, with the rear being intact. Previous owner's name to first free endpaper. Pictorial title with marginal tear near the gutter.

The text pages are very good indeed. Bright and clean, with just the occasional thumb mark. Gilt edges to text block. There are a number of known variations of this book, with some not having colour or tinted plates. We have not come across this particular variant before which is longer than the more common text pagination of 632pp. This particular volume has 13 colour plates including the Livingstone portrait preliminary title and map, plus 4 additional tinted plates. Along with the 702pp of text, a considerably longer volume than most.

A most attractive book.

Text in English.

viii + 702pp + Plates.
