Provenance; from the library of the late William St Clair (1937 - 2021), British historian, academic and author. The book appears to have a handwritten note by William St Clair, from Barham Manor, near Ipswich, commending the book as a Christmas present, but it presumably was never sent. Please see our other listings for related works.

Published by Fisher, Son & Co, London & Paris, 1836, first edition.

Letitia Elizabeth Landon (1802-1838), better known as L.E.L., was an English poet and novelist of the Victorian era, spanning romanticism and Victorian age writings. This series of books combine beautiful poetry with stunning printed plates.

A good cloth hardback with elaborate embossed design - the central element being a pheonix in a nest of flames. Covers are dark brown in colour. Covers are faded with bumping and wear. Previous owner's signature to inner endpaper. Some strain to the stitching at inner joints of endpapers at the front, but all still bound. Text is generally nice and clean with some spotting to the plates in places. With tissue guards. Gilt edges to text block.

58pp + 6pp advertisements + tissue guarded plates.
