The Kokka, 1905, 1906, deluxe bound set.

The Kokka, An Illustrated Monthly Journal of the Fine and Applied Art of Japan and other Eastern Countries. Volume XVI – July 1905 to July 1906

Published by Yazaemon-Cho, Kyobashi-Ku, Tokyo, Japan, July 1906.

This volume is an impressive large folio sized volume containing all the issues of The Kokka from July 1905 to July 1906, numbers 182-193, viii + 354pp. The title page and introductory contents lists are specific to this volume which stands as a wonderful publication in its own right. Text in English.

The Kokka is a Japanese art periodical which began life in 1889 and is renowned for its image quality. In the early twentieth century, an English language version was also produced.

The silk covered hard covers are bound in Japanese style with a beautiful gold pattern silk design and orange ties. Condition of cover is very good approaching near fine with a small degree of fraying at the edges and extremities.

Inside the text is printed on a quality thick ivory coloured stock with only occasional spotting. Contains many beautiful plates including printed tissue guards. Endpapers use a gold flecked paper. Gilt edges to text block.

The first and last pages have had a neat taped repair to secure them into the binding.

A beautiful volume in near fine condition overall. Also included are a few leaves of duplicate pages (not bound in) of the title page and a few of the contents pages.

Whilst we have seen many individual issues of The Kokka and even some simply bound compilations, this is the first time we have handled a volume with such ornate binding.

Covers principally Japanese art but occasional articles on other subjects such as Ancient Chinese bronzes. A most beautiful book.
