Goethe's Gedichte; Neue Musgabe (Goethe's Poems, New Edition), by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Published by J. G. Cotta'schen, Stuttgart, 1861. New Edition.

Prize presentation copy to Clara Chamberlain, by authority of the University of Cambridge via the Sussex Board for Local Examinations.

A good full polished calf hardback with gilt embossed cover and tooled spine with raised bands. Lightly bumped with front outer joint starting at head of spine. Spine darkened and title label worn. Some scuffing and wear. Marbled edges to text block. Dust toned to top edge.

Text is soundly bound, but with inner hinge beginning to weaken. Prize presentation label to first pastedown and bookplate of previous owner to first free endpaper - Fred Ryland, Baskerville House, Harborne. He was an engineer who died in 1899. Endpapers with feathered marbling.

Text is bright and clear throughout, but there is some water staining at the top of the book - mainly marginal but does extend to text, although not affecting legibility. Occasional and infrequent age spotting.
