History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic by William H. Prescott is a landmark work of nineteenth-century historical writing, first published in 1837 and widely regarded as one of the great narrative histories of its age. Focusing on the unification of Spain under Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, Prescott combines scholarly research with a vivid and engaging style, charting the political, religious and cultural transformation of Spain at the close of the medieval period. This revised edition, incorporating the author’s final corrections and additions and edited by John Foster Kirk, reflects the enduring authority and popularity of the work throughout the nineteenth century.

A very good full calf leather hardback with gilt ruled borders to covers and gilt tooled spine with raised bands and tan morocco title label. Covers with some scuffing and bumping. Joints are rubbed, with some wear to head and tail of spine. Covers with some discoloured areas due to sunning. Gilt decoration to board edges. All soundly bound.

With feathered marble design endpapers. Text is generally very good throughout - endpapers have some foxing and there are occasional scattered spots. There is some darkening to the marginal edges of Plates, but on the whole these are in better state than is often found. Soundly bound. With illustrations in text, as well as Plates. One 1.5cm closed marginal edge tear to advertisement page at the end of volume I.

Endpapers are marbled and matched to text block edges. First free endpaper with remains of previous bookplate.

Endpapers and the last few pages of the rear index with some spotting, but text overall is very good indeed - bright and clean throughout.
