The History of Glasgow, from the Earliest Accounts to the Present Time, with an Account of the Rise, Progress, and Present State of the Different Branches of Commerce and Manufactures now Carried on in the City of Glasgow, by John Gibson.

Printed by Rob. Chapman and Alex Duncan, for the Author, and sold by him at his lodgings in Gallowgate, and by the Booksellers in London, Edinburgh, &c. 1777. First edition - we have been unable to find any earlier reference to this work, and the author's Preface is also dated to 1777. An uncommon book.

A fair to good hardback with leather spine with raised bands and gilded black morocco label, and leather corners. Marbled paper over boards. Scuffed, bumped and rubbed with frayed head and tail of spine. Hinges largely split, and covers would be detached except for the cloth strengthening strip on the inner joints holding them in place.

The text pages are bright and clean and on the whole are good with some scattered spotting and light marginal staining. The map (often missing) is present, with old torn tape repair. A good reading copy overall, of a scarce 18th Century volume.

Text in English (plus some Latin in Appendix).

viii + 2pp + 391pp + fold-out map.
