A substantial and handsomely presented 1769 first edition of A Greek and English Lexicon to the New Testament by John Parkhurst — a foundational 18th-century biblical reference work offering detailed linguistic analysis of New Testament vocabulary. Parkhurst, a Cambridge scholar and cleric, sought to make the original Greek texts more accessible to English-speaking readers, integrating citations from Scripture and classical authors to illuminate meaning and usage.

The volume has been expertly rebacked in full calf using the original 18th-century boards and features sympathetic period-style tooling and titling. Internally, the pages are crisp and clean, with a strong text block, making this both a highly readable and collectable copy.

A Greek and English Lexicon to the New Testament: in Which the Words and Phrases Occurring in those Scared Books are Distinctly Explained, and the Meanings Assigned to Each, Authorized by References to Passages of Scripture, and Frequently Illustrated and Confirmed by Citations from the Old Testament, and from the Greek Writers. To this Work is Prefixed A Plain and Easy Greek Grammar, Adapted to the Use of Learners, and Of Those who Understand No Other Language than English. By John Parkhurst, M.A., Formerly Fellow of Clare-Hall, Cambridge.

Printed for W. Faden; B. Law; E. and C. Dilly; J. Robson; and F. Newbery, London. 1769 first edition. An uncommon volume.

Previous owner's inscription in ink to first pastedown who notes the re-binding date of 1958, and on the first free endpaper, verso, she notes some pencilled comment about the author's translations.

A very good full calf hardback with rebacked original boards and new corners added. Spine with raised bands and hand lettered morocco title label. With incised tooled decoration to the spine. Although the spine leather is a replacement, it has been made in sympathetic 18th Century style.

The text pages are bright and clean throughout and the text block is sound. Occasional minor imperfection, but a very usable and attractive copy.

Text mainly in English with Greek references.
