A Sporting Tour Through the Northern Parts of England and Great Part of the Highlands of Scotland, Colonel T. Thornton, 1896 Limited edition
A handsome and uncommon copy of this sporting travelogue, which first appeared in print in 1804.
A Sporting Tour Through the Northern Parts of England and Great Part of the Highlands of Scotland, by Colonel T. Thornton (Thomas Thornton, c. 1751-1823). A New edition with Coloured Plates by G.E. Lodge, Portraits and Selections from the Original Illustrations. Issued as part of 'The Sportsman's Library', edited by Sir Herbert Maxwell, Bart, M.P.
Published by Edward Arnold, London and New York, 1896. Printed in Edinburgh. Although not stated in the book, this particular copy was one of the large paper editions, with tipped-in colour plates, which was a limited edition. We believe there were in the order of 200 copies printed.
A near fine, very attractive hardback volume which has been bound in a later teal cloth, with gilt title to spine. Binding is crisp and clean, and everything is soundly bound. The book is bound with white card endpapers. Some light shelf wear scratches to front cover.
Text is in fine condition throughout - bright and clear, with just a little age toning to extremities. Plates are in lovely condition, with the colour plates being tipped-in. Text is clearly in unread condition, as many top edges still remain uncut. With deckled edges, as issued. Overall, a very smart book of an uncommon edition.
Text in English.
