An interesting 18th Century medical handbook for use by General Practitioners (and also laypeople). Originally written by Scottish physician, William Buchan (1729-1805), and published in 1769. It became one of the most popular medical texts in Europe and amongst European settlers in the Americas. It was translated into multiple languages. This particular edition also saw the contribution of Isaac Cathrall (1764-1819), an American physician.

Domestic Medicine; Or, A Treatise on the Prevention and Cure of Diseases, by Regimen and Simple Medicines; With an Appendix, Containing a Dispensatory for the Use of Private Practitioners. By William Buchan, M.D., Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. Adapted to the Diseases of America by Isaac Cathrall.

Printed by Richard Folwell, 548, 1797. First edition, thus. An uncommon edition.

A fair full leather hardback, which would benefit from some restoration. Bound in full calf leather which is worn and rubbed, with old repairs to the leather, and is largely absent from the lower half of the spine. The result is weak binding at the rear with the rear cover partially detached and a slight skew to the book when opened, particularly evident at the front where pages are more weakly bound.

Text is generally good throughout - all clear and legible, but with scattered spotting and darkened at the extremities of the top edges. Pencil annotations to endpapers. Despite all faults, still an interesting classic medical text to add to the library of any Medical collector, and price is commensurate to condition.

Text in English.

Dimensions: Approximately 212mm high x 136mm wide x 45mm deep.
