Printed by Richard Smythson, Holborn, London. 1881 first edition (date derived from dedication page which includes August 1881 - can be confused with a printing date of 1880 as this date can be found as part of the images used on the main title page). Binding by Donaldson of Leith. This is now a scarce publication.

A good 2 Volume set which has 70 attractive plates in total. A substantial publication of 2 folio sized volumes, complete. Bindings appear to be contemporary to issue date, but would probably have been chosen by the owner as we believe the original publication was possibly in sections by subscription.

Covers are maroon cloth over boards, with leather spine and corners with gilt decoration and titles. Leather is worn to extremities and covers are scuffed and bumped. Volume 1 in particular has some prominent pale scuff marks to front and Volume 2 has the lower right corner nibbled away. Binding is sound in both volumes. Bookplate of Duncan Alastair Campbell.

Some spotting to endpapers and titles. Text is very good throughout - pages are bright and clean. Occasional minor flaw to page edge. With beautifully detailed images throughout. A rare chance to find this scarce set.

Text in English.
