Original 1940s Vintage Photo Album of Seaman William John Reginald Brown - Whaling interest, Falkland Islands

A fascinating album of original photographs chronicling the life of Seaman William John Reginald Brown, of Stromness, Orkney, Scotland. He was born in 1929. The album is accompanied with comprehensive paper work showing that he became an ordinary seaman during the Second World War, as a boy straight from school, working on the 'Wisbech', described as a coasting vessel. Subsequently he was employed on whaling and trawling vessles for Salveson of Leith. Supporting documents and references cover the period from the 1940s to 1960, and show he was considered to be a very capable seaman.

The photos are housed in a Japanese photo album, with decorated lacquered front cover, of size of approximately 270mm high x 390mm wide x 40mm deep.

Photos are mounted on black card pages with tissue guards. The album is fully stocked and comprises 31 pages of photographs - approximately 229 photographs, mainly in black and white, with a few later images in colour. The album covers the 1940s to 1960s. Most photographs are of a size of 9cm x 6.5cm (3.5" x 2.5"").

There are 3 plastic folders with the album containing supporting documents.

The photographs which will be of the widest general interest will be those focused on the working practices in the whaling industry, and Brown's visits to the Falkland Islands which are illustrated here. There are many pages of such photographs, as well as those of a more family interest. An intriguing glimpse into a bygone era.
