A scarce copy of Scottish writer Augustus Muir's memoir of the bookseller, John Baxter. Although written in diary form, the bookseller in question is a fictional parodic amalgam of Edinburgh booksellers of the time, their outlook on life, and their customer interactions.

A good black cloth hardback with printed yellow titles - the cover with mottled markings and binding a little skewed. Mild bumping. With the scarce original dustjacket. The jacket has taped repairs to the inside, and with losses to the spine, which is darkened. With a few nicks and nibbles, and price clipped front flap. Housed in removable clear protective plastic.

Text is actually very good throughout. Some mild age toning, but bright and clean. Previous owner's inscription to first free endpaper, which also has a marginal 1cm closed edged tear. Some minor age spotting to pastedowns.

A rare and entertaining read.
