Athenes; Trente Planches en Couleur d'apres les Tableaux de Paul Bret. Ornementations du Peintre. By Camille Mauclair.

Provenance; from the library of the late William St Clair (1937 - 2021), British historian, academic and author. William St Clair signature to first pastedown with a pencil annotation about the artist, and minor pencil annotations to inside rear cover. Please see our other listings for related works.

Published by Henri Laurens, Editeur, Paris. Dated 1935 to title page (and thus often misidentified as a 1935 printing), but there is a printer's date of 1946 near the rear of the book.

A good hardback with coloured paper over boards, with a chagrrin style spine (possibly textured vellum, or may be just a textured imitation), with red title label. Spine is discolored and marked, and corners bumped. A 1cm split near the top of front hinge. Some spotting to endpapers.

The text is lovely and bright, with just occasional spotting. Featuring many tipped in colour plates by Paul Bret - all accounted for. A little fragile between the sewn gatherings at the spine. Nonetheless, a charming book with lovely illustrations and plates.

Text in French.
