Beatrice Webb, by Margaret Cole, Longmans, Green and Co, 1945 first edition
Beatrice Webb is a clear, engaging biography of one of the most important figures in British social reform, written by Margaret Cole. Cole traces Webb’s journey from her early life and intellectual formation through to her work with Sidney Webb, the Fabian Society, and the founding of institutions such as the London School of Economics. Alongside her public achievements, the book gives attention to Webb’s personality, ambitions, and doubts, presenting her as both a formidable thinker and a deeply human figure. Written soon after Webb’s death, it offers a readable and well-informed account of her influence on twentieth-century social policy and political thought, and serves as a solid introduction to the life and achievements of Beatrice Webb.
