Later Renaissance Architecture in England; A Series of examples of the domestic buildings erected subsequent to the Elizabethan Period. Edited, with an introductory and descriptive text by John Belcher and Mervyn E. Macartney. 1897-1901, 6 Folios. 170 Separate Plates + Text.

Published by B.T. Batsford, London. 1897-1901. First edition. The set was available to subscribers in six parts - each for one guinea. The publisher's also made arrangements with a bindery, so that if subscribers wished, they could have their set bound in 2 volumes, and hence the bulk of the text, issued with the largest folio - Part VI - is arranged in 2 Volume sections to account for this.

A very good set of folios, in impressive condition for their age. We presume the number of blank sheets/tissue guards are as issued, but this is not verifiable. Large 'Imperial folio' size. Folio covers are thick board with blue linen cloth spine, housing loose leaf plates. All spines are intact.

Part I: 12pp Introduction + 1 x blank + 26 Plates + 2 x tissue guards.
Sun fading marks to front cover. Some rubbing and wear to covers. 1st text page is heavily foxed. Plates nice and clean throughout.

Part II: 1 x blank + 26 Plates + 13 x tissue guards (the guards would have been inserted in various positions throughout the series, should the subscriber have their folios bound as books). Sun fading marks to front cover. Some rubbing and wear to covers. Plates generally nice and clean throughout. 1 x plate foxed to reverse. 1 x 1cm closed tear on 1 plate to edge. 1 x slight crease to corner of one plate. Very occasional spotting.

Part III: 2 x blanks + 26 Plates.
Some rubbing and wear to covers. Plates nice and clean throughout. 1 Plate with 1cm closed tear to edge. 1 Plate with small soiling mark in top corner. 2 plates with some foxing, mainly to reverse side.

Part IV: 1 x blank + 26 Plates.
Some rubbing and wear to covers. Sun fading marks to front cover. Plates nice and clean throughout, with a few having some foxing. 1 x Plate with moderate foxing, 1 x Plate with mild foxing, and 1 x plate with discolored edge.

Part V: 1 blank + 26 Plates.
Some rubbing and wear to covers. Sun fading marks to front cover. Plates nice and clean throughout, with a few having some foxing.

Part VI: 4pp Adam publication Prospectus + Volume I titles + 2pp Preface + List of Subscribers to x, + Index to xxiv + Volume I text to 64pp, + Volume II titles, + Volume II text to 116pp + 40 Plates.
Some rubbing and wear to covers. Subscriber's note tipped in to inside cover. Original tie ribbon detached from rear. This is a thicker folio than the others as it contains both a larger number fo plates, plus the main text. Plates nice and clean throughout, with a few plates with discolored edges.

Dimensions: Imperial Folio size. Approximate size, of each folio: 484mm x 360mm x 32mm. Substantial - weighs approximate 15kg unpacked.
