Published by Kaibunsha Ltd, Tokyo, 1960. First edition thus, following the first publication by Chatto and Windus of 1922. A contemporary fantasy which won the James Tait Memorial Prize and the Hawthornden Prize shortly after publication.

This Japanese edition features the main text in English with Japanese introduction and notes. A very nice example of this scarce variant of a classic text.

A very good paperback in paper wraps. from the author's personal library (bookplate to inside cover). Small nibbles to head and tail of spine. Text is very good - all nice and clean and soundly bound.

Dustjacket wraps with some spotting to front and discoloration to spine. Small torn loss (3.5cm x 0.6cm tear)to the last Japanese publisher's page at the foot (not affecting text).
