Caledonia Illustrated; Scotland Illustrated, William Beattie, 2 Volumes 1838
Caledonia Illustrated in a Series of Views Taken Expressly for the Work, by W.H. Bartlett, T. Allom, and others; The Descriptive Text by William Beattie, M. D. Also known as 'Scotland Illustrated' from preliminary title page.
Published by George Virtue & Co, London and New York, c. 1838 (Undated but 1838 appears to be the most accepted date in library databases.) Two volumes complete.
Both volumes contain many very attractive engraved illustrations of Scottish scenes.
A good set overall. Burgundy leather spine and corners with raised bands and gilt decoration. Marbled boards. Covers are scuffed and extremities bumped. Edges of leather and board ends a little worn. Gilt edges to text block. Text is in good condition - some foxing around plates, but still an attractive set. Volume 1 missing 1st coloured blank endpaper, plus one normal blank endpaper. Hinges showing in volume 1 inside front cover, but both volumes are still soundly bound. Previous owner's annotations to first free blank endpaper in volume 1. Uncommon.
Both volumes have frequent bookmarks and plant pressings in various places which we have left in situ (not affecting text).

Vol 2: prelims + 172pp + plates.
