The Complete Works of Flavius Josephus, comprising The History of the Jews, &c., and the Life of Josephus, William Whiston translation
The Complete Works of Flavius Josephus, comprising The History of the Jews, &c., and the Life of Josephus, written by Himself. Translated by William Whiston, Professor of Mathematics in the University of Cambridge. With a Geographical Survey of the Land of promise, Illustrated with Coloured Maps, and a Sequel to the History of the Jews, continued to the Present Time.
Published by The London Printing and Publishing Company, limited, London and New York. Undated, but carries an owner's inscription dating to 1876, so prior to that date. From appearances alone we would estimate to 1870.
A substantial large hardback volume with black leather spine and corners, with gilt borders and raised bands and gilt decoration to spine. With a dark blue textured cloth over boards. Covers are worn, rubbed and scuffed, with some soiling, but the book is soundly bound. Overall, a very good copy. With marbled endpapers.
As well as the owner's inscription, there is a letter of condolence to the previous owner's wife, on his passing, dated to 1889.
Some spotting to endpapers and prelims, but overall text is very good, and is beautifully and extensively illustrated throughout. Some fingering marks, and gentle age toning. The fold-out colored maps are still vibrant. Gilt edges to text block. Presents very attractively with high quality illustration.
