L. J. A. McHenry’s A New and Improved Spanish Grammar was a standard 19th-century English-language manual for Spanish learners, designed both for the classroom and for self-instruction. McHenry, himself a native speaker, structured the work in two sections - covering the basics of the language first, then guiding learners through etymology and syntactical rules using extensive examples, dialogues, and annotations. The 1837 Sherwood, Gilbert, and Piper edition includes an “Appendix” of additions and refinements, underscoring the grammar’s enduring popularity and pedagogical value during an era when modern language study was gaining momentum.
