First published in 1781, A View of Society and Manners in Italy is one of the finest eighteenth-century travel accounts of Italy, combining detailed observations of the country's landscapes, cities, art and architecture with perceptive commentary on its society, customs and politics. Written by the Scottish physician and travel writer John Moore, whose European tours were widely admired by contemporary readers, the work blends travel narrative with reflections on Italian culture and anecdotes concerning notable historical figures. It became one of the most popular British accounts of Italy published during the Grand Tour era and remains an important contemporary record of late eighteenth-century European life.
