An Account of the Operations Carried On for Accomplishing A Trigonometrical Survey of England and Wales; From the Commencement, in the Year 1784, to the End of the Year 1796. Begun Under the Supervision of The Royal Society, and Continued by Order of The Honourable Board of Ordnance. First Published in, and Now Revised from, The Philosophical Transactions. By Captain William Mudge, F.R.S. and Mr. Isaac Dalby. Vol. I. Illustrated with XXII Copper-Plates.
Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. for W. Faden, Geographer to His Majesty, and to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, Charing-Cross, London, 1799. First edition.
A very good text lock bound in only fair full contemporary calf leather covers. Covers are worn, scuffed and bumped with losses to the spine. Leather is split along outer joints and binding is weak. With marbled endpapers with Parisian booksellers label to first pastedown (spine title is also in French). Worn to edges of free endpaper.
Text pages are clean and bright throughout, with only mild scattered age spotting. This volume is notable for its fold-out plates, all of which are present - fine engravings featuring maps, plans and the technical/engineering diagrams of the equipment used in the survey methodology.
Despite the flawed covers, an interesting and engaging volume.
Text in English.
xx + (1) + 437pp (including 2 fold-out tables) + XXII Plates (mainly fold-outs - all present as called for).
