Burmese Kalat lacquerware pedestal, late 19th Century.

This beautiful lacquerware 'Kalat' pedestal is from Burma and is constructed from lacquered wood and a gilded metal frill, with elaborate golden decoration using coloured glass. Such a pedestal was used as a stand for special and elaborate betel boxes, often for ceremonial use. Also used as a stand for a 'Thabeik' - a monk's bowl.

A scarce find in the UK.

Condition is good overall. Structurally sound but with old wear and general ageing. Crack surrounding base of central stand, but is all structurally sound.
