Nakamura Hajime (1912–1999) was a prominent Japanese scholar of Indian philosophy, Buddhism, and comparative thought. Born in Matsue, Japan, he studied at the University of Tokyo and earned his doctorate with a focus on early Vedānta philosophy. He later became a professor at the same university and founded the Tōhō Gakuin (Eastern Institute), aiming to make Eastern philosophy more accessible to the general public through lectures and publications.

Renowned for his prolific output, Nakamura wrote over 170 books and translated the entire Pāli Tripiṭaka into Japanese, a landmark achievement in Buddhist studies. His major works, such as Ways of Thinking of Eastern Peoples, helped shape global understanding of Asian thought. He received numerous awards, including the Order of Culture and membership in the Japan Academy. His legacy lives on through his writings, translations, and the Nakamura Hajime Memorial Hall in his hometown.
