The work of David Roberts (1796-1864) remains among the most celebrated visual records of the Near East produced in the nineteenth century. Based on his extensive travels in Egypt, Nubia, and the Levant during the 1830s, Roberts' drawings were later issued as a series of finely detailed lithographs that brought the architecture, landscapes, and monuments of the region to a wide European audience. The present two-volume gift edition brings together The Holy Land and Egypt and Nubia, combining Roberts' striking images with contemporary descriptive texts, and offering a handsome modern presentation of two of the great illustrated travel works of the period.

David Roberts; Egypt & Nubia, and The Holy Land, Two-volume gift edition in slipcase.

The set comprises:

The Holy Land; From drawings made on the spot by David Roberts R.A.. With historical descriptions by the Revd. George Croly L.L.D.; and;

Egypt and Nubia; From drawings made on the spot by David Roberts R.A.. With historical descriptions by William Brockedon F.R.S.

Published by The American University in Cairo Press, by arrangement with White Star S.r.I - Vercelli, Italy. Printed in Italy, 1999.

Overall a fine set. The slipcase has printed paper over boards and brown cloth to top and bottom. Some minor shelf wear to the slipcase, but in excellent shape overall and structurally without any issues.

Both volumes are fine brown cloth hardbacks with gilt lettering. Text is bright, clean and soundly bound - probably unread. The dustjackets are fully intact and in fine condition. Spine colour is lighter - it is unclear whether this is part of the design, but if spines are a little sun-faded, then dustjackets would be considered near fine.

Text in English.
