Description of Ancient Bronzes in the Collection of Baron Sumitomo, 1911, rare silk folio set

RECENTLY SOLD - PLEASE CONTACT US IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHEN WE GET ANOTHER EXAMPLE

Printed in Kyoto, 1911. Wonderful set of 2 x silk folios (very large) each containing 32 plates of the bronzes in the Sumitomo collection.

Extremely rare and desirable.

Each folio has a patterned silk outer cover. Folio 1 has some damp staining on front, minor wear to extremities and one fastening toggle missing. Folio 2 has similar small patch of damp staining on cover and wear to corners and silk beginning to lift on rear. Interiors of folio covers also show signs of damp staining. Folios remain strong and hinges good.

Inside each folio there is a stiff card with (presumably) publishing information and a large booklet containing text and images about the bronzes. Folio 1 contains a 12pp booklet and Folio 2 16pp. These are in very good condition.

Of the 64 one sided card plates, almost all carry signs of damp staining in the lower left corner. The image of the bronze in the centre remains crisp and clear and for the vast majority of the plates the staining does not touch the picture of the bronze (see photographs).

We have carried out a test restoration on these plates and as can be seen from the photograph it is possible to restore these plates perfectly. The water staining can be removed very successfully.

Dimensions (each folio): 46.5cm high x 31.5cm wide x 2cm deep.

A very rare set.
