Provenance; from the library of the late William St Clair (1937 - 2021), British historian, academic and author. No signature, and the annotations are not in his hand. Please see our other listings for related works. 

Published by George Bell and Sons, London, 1902. 

A substantial set of 2 fair hardbacks. With burgundy cloth over boards and brown cloth to spine with gilt titles. Some scuffing, bumping and fraying to head and tail. There is some give in the spine as inner joints are cracked and strained with the heavy text blocks.

Previous owner has created a hand scripted list of Artists on the blank endpapers at the front of each volume. Text is clean with some previous owner's pencil annotations. Text blocks a little fragile at spine binding.

 Volume I: A-K: xi + 755pp.

 Volume II: L-Z: xi + 771pp + 6pp Monograms of Painters and Engravers.
