Marsh was Private Secretary to Winston Churchill, and also to Prime Minister Asquith. He was a renowned classical scholar and translator and provided advice to Somerset Maugham on his writing. He was a respected Patron of the Arts, supporting a number of artists and also introduced Siegfried Sassoon to Churchill.

A good copy. Blue cloth hardback with facsimile signature in gilt to cover with labelled spine design. Slightly rubbed and bumped. Dustjacket is good. Not price clipped. Original laminate peeling away at top of front cover. A little shelf worn. Text is clean. Owner's name sticker - Charles Ballantyne, Yarrow, is fixed to the first pastedown.

Of principal interest is a tipped in handwritten 2pp letter to the first free endpaper. This is a detailed letter from Marsh to Charles Ballantyne in 1949, and is clearly one of friendship. With signature at the foot of the reverse of the letter.
