Griechische Plastik in Archaischer und Klassischer Zeit, Friedrich Gerke, 1938
Griechische Plastik in Archaischer und Klassischer Zeit (Greek sculpture in the Archaic and Classical periods), by Friedrich Gerke.
Provenance; from the library of the late William St Clair (1937 - 2021), British historian, academic and author. His signature to first pastedown. This appears to be a book of some significance in his Parthenon research - relevant photographs have his detailed pencil annotations, as well as some further annotation at the rear. There is also a personal letter enclosed from an academic colleague. Please see our other listings for related works.
Published by Atlantis - Verlag, Zurich & Berlin. Printed in Germany. First edition, 1938.
A fair copy of this cloth covered hardback. Covers with come soling, bumping and wear. Frayed to head and tail of spine. There is flex in the binding with endpapers cracked at inner joints. Dustjacket is partially present - front cover and one detached flap only - frayed and worn. Spotting to inside covers.
Text is clean with some age discoloration. Some spotting to text block edge. Well illustrated with high quality images.
A far from perfect copy, but of significant scholarly interest with William St Clair's annotations concerning the Parthenon marbles.
