H. D. was the pen name of Hilary Doolittle, American poet, novelist and memoirist. She was one of the 'Imagist' avant-garde poets of the early 20th Century, who's contemporaries included Ezra Pound, to whom she was once engaged. She did however marry the poet, Richard Adlington, and had platonic friendships with DH Lawrence and Sigmund Freud. She later became a feminist and LGBT rights icon and was open about her bisexuality.
