An interesting association copy of Martin B. Duberman’s documentary play, drawing on letters, speeches and historical records to trace the African American experience from slavery to the struggle against segregation. First performed in New York in 1963, it brings individual voices to the fore in a powerful account of racial injustice and resistance. This copy comes from the personal library of the distinguished theatre director, writer and biographer Alan Strachan (1944–2025), acquired directly from his former home in Invergowrie, and bears his ownership signature on the first free endpaper.
