Japanese woodblock print book; Ehon Saiyūki (絵本西遊記), an Edo-period illustrated adaptation of Journey to the West (Saiyūki 西遊記). Such adaptations were common in Japan, where the famous Chinese novel was transcribed into kana-kanji mixed texts with woodblock illustrations for Japanese readers.

The publisher is 須原茂兵衛 (Suhara Mohei), a well-known Edo-period bookseller who produced many illustrated works. Dated to 1693 (Genroku 6).

The book includes a number of attractive full-page illustrations. One scene depicts a Chinese-style scene with a seated figure, possibly Xuanzang (the Buddhist monk), surrounded by attendants, animals, and mythical deities.

In good condition overall. Softback with blue washi paper covers with backing. With mounted title label, and loose publisher's label inserted at rear. With wear and rubbing. Cover frayed at extremities.

Text with wear commensurate with age. Occasional flaws and infrequent old worming marks. An attractive and uncommon publication.

Text in old Japanese.
