Jessie Cameron; A Highland Story, by Lady Rachel Butler. William Blackwood, 1857
An uncommon work of nineteenth-century Scottish fiction, Jessie Cameron; A Highland Story is a poignant tale of love, loyalty and social divisions, set against the rural life and traditions of the Scottish Highlands. Written by Lady Rachel Butler, the novel follows Jessie Cameron and Allister Stuart, whose youthful attachment is frustrated by differences in social standing and changing circumstances. Combining Highland character and local colour with a sympathetic portrayal of enduring love and disappointment, the work reflects Victorian literary interest in Scottish regional life. First published in 1857, the novel was favourably received by contemporary critics, particularly for its portrayal of Highland life. This is the second edition, published in the same year as the first, with engraved frontispiece.
