Medieval Illuminated Manuscript Leaf, 15th Century, French Breviary.

SOLD

Illuminated manuscript leaf on vellum, housed in professional mount with protective clear covering. Double sided text.

From a French Breviary, with initials in colours and gilt, with gothic bastarda script.

French. 15th Century - previous annotation of circa 1470 AD to mount board. 14 rows of text in single column. Latin.

Mount has hand drawn coloured and gilt borders surrounding the leaf. Hinged mount board provides access to both sides of the leaf.

Verso, has translated text and workings.

This Devotion exemplifies a more primitive, yet clear and legible hand. The text expresses gratification on the part of God's elect, persons whose privilege it is to enter His holy temple. It concludes with a plea for continued Divine attention and assistance.

The author here, in the same severe hand, sparsely decorated with Celtic uncials, testifies to God's awesome power. The highest mountains and the depths of the sea will resound with God's majestic voice. All that lives will magnify His name.

Dimensions:

Mount board surround outer dimensions: 355mm high x 280mm wide.

Inner mount window: 101mm high x 76mm wide.

Actual size of vellum leaf: 93mm x 66mm.
