Original Japanese Woodblock Print, Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III), 1846-1851

Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III, was a hugely popular Japanese woodblock artist of the 19th Century, even more successful than contemporaries such as Hokusai and Hiroshige.

This woodblock print known as 'Actors' or 'Kabuki' is the left panel of a triptych and illustrates Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Toneri Sakuramaru. Published Edo period. Carries double Nanushi censor seals of Murata and Mera which indicates a printing date of 1846-1852. Published by Miyakozawa, indicating a date of 1845-1851.

Dimensions: 36.7cm high x 25cm wide (actual image size) with a 1cm border along the top edge. Vertical oban.

Housed in a paper folio attached just lightly along the top edge.

The print is in very good condition. One small wormhole of around 4mm, repaired at rear (near actor's foot) and 1 x 5cm crease (now flattened) near other foot and 1 x 2cm crease (now flattened) in lower right corner. Colours remain vibrant and striking. A scarce print.
